Container Gardening

Practical advice for growing plants successfully in pots, troughs and planters, especially in sunny, dry and exposed gardens.

Why container gardening works well locally

Pots, containers and raised planters can work particularly well in East Dean, Friston and other South Downs gardens where chalky soil, dry conditions and exposed sites can make planting directly into the ground more challenging.

Containers also allow gardeners to grow plants that may struggle in alkaline soil, provide flexibility in smaller gardens and patios, and make it easier to create seasonal displays with colour and structure throughout the year.

Plants well suited to containers

  • Agapanthus
  • Lavender
  • Salvia
  • Olive trees
  • Skimmia
  • Heuchera
  • Japanese maples
  • Pelargoniums
  • Festuca glauca
  • Dwarf conifers
  • Herbs such as rosemary and thyme
  • Dahlias

Container gardening tips

  • Use peat-free compost suitable for the plants being grown.
  • Containers dry out faster than borders and may need regular watering during hot weather.
  • Add drainage material and ensure pots have adequate drainage holes.
  • Feed flowering plants regularly through the growing season.
  • Choose larger pots where possible, as they retain moisture more effectively.
  • Protect vulnerable pots from frost damage during winter.
